The San Jose MEPS is one of two Military Entrance Processing Stations located in Northern California; the other is in Sacramento. The origin of the current San Jose MEPS dates back to the late 1950s when it was located on Van Ness Street in San Francisco. In the early 1960s it was relocated to Clay Street in Oakland, and later in 1986 it moved to Broadway also in downtown Oakland.

In October 2000, the MEPS relocated from Oakland to Mountain View, adjacent to Moffett Federal Airfield, and was renamed the San Jose MEPS. Whether located in San Francisco, Oakland or San Jose area, the MEPS has had a long and proud history of processing applicants from the Bay Area into the armed services.
