The Fort Jackson MEPS was originally called the Armed Forces Examining and Entrance Station (AFEES); the name changed on 1 January 1982. In February 1971, the Station moved to a newly constructed $1.139M facility at its present location, replacing an old, six-building complex required to process applicants each day. The facility was specifically designed to be a MEPS; it encompasses 43,275 square feet of space in a two-story structure.

The Fort Jackson MEPS is one of few in USMEPCOM located on a military installation and one of even fewer with lodging, dining and processing capabilities in the same building -- up through 1989. In CY90, construction to close off billeting areas on the 2nd floor was completed and converted to Service Liaisons offices. In addition, the full-service kitchen was closed down and lunch for applicants was contracted.
